The other day my sister and I were chatting about the war against blemishes we had been fighting. Both being over 25 years of age we figured the worst of our skin troubles were behind us. Boy were we wrong! While working at Shoppers I saw so many women in their late 20's and beyond come in complaining about the same thing. Hormonal acne. It is usually found around our mouths and graces us with its presence in the form of large, cystic, painful bumps under our skin. When I told my sister about the 25+ acne she said "if that's the gift I got for my 25th birthday, I would like to exchange it for something else". I couldn't agree more.
The thing about this type of acne is it is really hard to conquer. It isn't what you're eating (my sister is the healthiest person I know), nor is it poor skin care habits. It's cyclical and very hard to control. So don't beat yourself up over it. I know that is easier said than done. Trust me. I get it. Completely. I read several articles (this one being the most informative - though the products are from the UK) on cystic acne hoping I could give you a miracle cure. But alas, I am forced to conclude that treatment is not only a long process but can be quite costly as well (laser treatment for scarring).
Don't worry though. It isn't entirely bad news. We might not be able to rid ourselves of these painful bumps as quickly as we'd like, or get rid of the scars overnight. BUT, we can cover them up.
I consider myself a bit of an expert in the cover up department. I would rather people not know about the war on my face. I'd rather cover it, so when I leave the house I still feel like my self. So, I thought I would share some of my beauty secrets with you. I know I have written a blog about covering a zit, but I thought I would make a confession about a recent, unexpected, find that provided me with pleasant results. Mineral makeup. I have always been quite skeptical about mineral makeup. I found it messy, and didn't think it would provide the coverage I was looking for. Well. I will admit it, I couldn't have been more wrong.
My morning beauty routine is just that, routine. I have my 'go to products' and always follow the same steps (as mentioned in this blog entry). Loving makeup for as long as I have, coupled with having difficult skin has made me incredibly picky when it comes to products that both (a) feel light enough on my skin that I don't feel I'm wearing a mask, yet (b) give me coverage that is strong enough to mask the red blemishes I am battling. That is not an easy combo to find. This is a picture I took before heading to Buffalo, NY last weekend. I went there in search of some new makeup products. I spent a lot of time in MAC trying on different powders and blush colours so when I left I was 'naked' faced, and feeling pretty vulnerable with my glaring red bumps on display.
Just as we were about to leave the mall I spotted a Bare Minerals store. I had heard a lot of women ask about it when I worked at Shoppers. They claimed it was great for sensitive skin, as well as those who are suffering with break outs. I thought to myself, what do I have to lose? I went in and asked the girl working there (Rachel was her name, and she was wonderful!) if she would show me what Bare Minerals foundation was all about. I knew that she was in for a challenge as right now my skin has been the worst I can remember it being in years. She cleansed, moisturized, and primed my face and then applied the foundation, 'mineral veil' powder, bronzer and blush. When I looked in the mirror at the final product I was blown away. I couldn't believe my skin. It looked amazing. It takes a LOT for me to say that about my skin, as well as about a makeup product. I told myself I wouldn't buy it unless I was blown away. And I was.
This was the kit I purchased. At Christmas I went on about makeup 'kits'. I love when I can get a starter kit to try a new product, or how Benefit makes kits where you can try a few of their most popular products without shelling out your money on a full sized product. Only to be disappointed with the result and toss it into your makeup bag never to use again. Or even worse, use it up even though you don't like it just because of how costly it was. I get that, makeup can be pricey. Which is why I always suggest you try before you buy.
What I love about THIS kit in particular is that not only does it come with a full sized (customizable - as in they match your shade) foundation, but also comes with the mineral veil (powder), warmth (bronzer), primer, and all of the brushes you need to achieve a flawless face. Everything for $61. I especially love the concealer brush. When I looked at each item individually I was really impressed with the value as the brushes alone added up to $88. When I read the reviews online, many people said they buy this kit when they need new brushes. I think that's a great idea.
The Bare Minerals Foundation comes in both the original format, as well as a matte option (and did I mention it has SPF 15? Awesome bonus!). I've read mixed things about the matte foundation. Even those with oily skin didn't seem too keen on it. Now, I will warn you. I would not recommend this foundation for those who have dry skin. It is a loose powder, so if your skin is dry and flaky then this won't help you. What will help you is moisturizer, and makeup that hydrates dry skin. The thing about blemishes, and skin troubles is nothing can be done when your skin is too dry. Moisturizer and primer are key, especially during the winter months! For myself, my skin is combination. I have an oily T-zone so this foundation works well for my skin. It gives me a healthy glow, and the coverage is amazing! Since I use acne treatments at night my chin can often get dry and flaky. So I have to be mindful of this and really rehydrate that area of my face in order for the product to work its magic. I was hesitant to admit how much I loved it. My Lise Watier concealer has been there for me for years. I never leave home without it. So, to not use it in the morning felt so strange. I couldn't believe I found something that was long lasting and covered my redness so well. I gave Bare Minerals a week to prove itself to me - I was looking for a reason to go back to my tried, trusted and true products...but it won me over. Right now this makeup is exactly what my skin needs.
If you have oily skin, red, uneven skin, blemishes, and like your foundation light and your coverage strong then you might find yourself falling in love with Bare Minerals.
I know I have. If you have any questions at all about this product review please ask in the comment section below.
