I love Bobbi Brown. I'm a big fan of her books and think that she has many great words of wisdom to share with women of all ages. I was reading her book Pretty Powerful and something she said really stood out to me about being comfortable in our own skin (and makeup):
Women look and feel their best when they are comfortable. But if you don't experiment with different looks, you can get stuck in a beauty rut. You will never know what looks, colours, or formulas you will fall in love with unless you try them.
Makeup is supposed to enhance our natural beauty. You should never feel uncomfortable in your skin because of your makeup. I have heard many stories where someone has paid to have their makeup done, only to leave and re-do it themselves. Makeup should not leave you feeling like an unrecognizable version of your former self, but instead should leave you feeling like an enhanced version of yourself. Even if it's just a bit of BB cream, blush, mascara and lip gloss. Makeup should leave you feeling confident and beautiful.
I know I've said it before, but please don't be afraid to experiment with makeup. I love the look on a person's face after I've finished a makeup application. I often hear, "I wish I could look like this every day!" I want you to know that you can. It is nice to splurge on a makeup artist for special events, wedding days, graduations, or any milestone where there will be a multitude of photos taken. Makeup artists have products that you won't find in the average makeup kit, that will create a long lasting look that photographs well. However, I don't just want you to feel great that day. I want you to feel great everyday! So try out new looks. If you have a quiet night and some free time try a new look before bed. If you don't like it, wash it off and start over! Don't try a new look with 15 minutes to spare before you have to head out the door. The last thing you want is to spend the whole day feeling uncomfortable in your skin.
Here is a day and night look that I've worn. Remember, everyone is different. My day look might be your night look and that is perfectly okay! As Bobbi says, wear what is comfortable for you!
For your first experiment, I would like you to try to change your makeup look from day to night. Many of us have our signature look (myself included!). For some that might be burts bees lip chap and a pony tail, for others that might be false lashes applied daily. That's fine, if that's what makes you feel your best. I just want you to push the envelope a bit when it comes to changing your makeup look. Here are a few things you can do:
Also, with Valentine's Day coming up it might be nice to surprise that special someone by changing up your look! If you have an evening out planned - try one of the day to evening tricks. Stay in your comfort zone and highlight your favourite features. Let your inner beauty shine!
Thanks for reading!
