I have been wanting to create an Ursula inspired look for a while. When you google Ursula makeup some of the results that came back made me realize just how difficult a task this was going to be. However, I do like a challenge so I set up my makeup tools and set to work transforming myself into the famous sea witch from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid.
As you can see from the photo, I did get a wee bit carried away with the photo shoot! It was just too much fun being a villain! This was probably the hardest look I have done to date, since Ursula is so cartoon like. If you want to re create this look you can do so by following these steps:
Well, the closest I will ever become to looking like one anyway. Though I might be able to pull off snow white too! I love Disney, always have, always will. I thought that I would post a transformation this week into the beautiful Disney Princess, Pocahontas.
I created this look based on the 'before' picture. The lesson I learned from this transformation is photographing a change in contouring and skin tones is not easily picked up without the right lighting. Next time I will be sure to capture pictures with the natural sunlight!
These are the steps I followed to achieve this look:
Makeup on mature skin is one of the most difficult tasks for a makeup artist, or so they tell me. I have not had as much experience working with mature skin, however my mother kindly volunteered to be my model so I could practice. There are a few things that have to be altered when you're working with a client with mature skin, however they are small so don't worry! If you follow these tips and tricks your skin will look fresh and youthful. Just look at my mom! She is a perfect example.
My mom, like so many of us, is rushed in the mornings. Most of us do not have much time to spend doing makeup in the morning. She wanted to know how to achieve a 5 minute face. So, we went to Wal Mart and purchased a few items so she could spend 5 minutes every morning and leave the house feeling great!
Steps for a 5 minute face:
Tonight's makeup design class was great! I thought I'd share a few interesting facts I've learned so far:
1. Studies have shown that foundation, BB cream, etc. slow down signs of aging. Why? Because they add an extra barrier between your skin and the sun.
2. However, if you go to sleep without cleansing your face, it ages your skin by 7 days. This might not seem like a lot, but if you skipped your night time facial cleansing for a year that is 7 years you have added to the look of your skin.
In conclusion, don't be afraid to wear your BB cream, foundation, face product of choice everyday, but DO remember to always wash your face before bed!
Speaking of bed, it's about that time right now!

Never underestimate the power of defined eyebrows. They are largely responsible for framing your face. Eyebrow maintenance is easy to overlook. However, well groomed eyebrows can make a huge difference!
Okay, let me rewind a minute, I'm getting ahead of myself. Some of you might be reading this thinking what is threading? Threading is a method of hair removal that is similar to an epilator. Hair is caught in the thread, twisted, and removed. I taught myself to thread by watching the YouTube video below:
Threading does take a lot of practice. Luckily for me I come from a big family with many women in it who let me practice on them! The method that Eily311 uses in her video is the one that I use, and find very effective for shaping eyebrows. You can also thread other areas of the face as well, if needed.
Here are the reasons why I love threading:
Ok. I know it is a bit early to start thinking about what you're going to dress up as, but I couldn't resist. I love Halloween! I think my love of makeup first began when I was a kid and would volunteer to do face painting for anyone who would let me. Kiddies day, I was there. I loved any opportunity to unleash my creative side. That hasn't changed. Halloween is a great opportunity to use costume makeup and create a totally different look. You can turn yourself into your favourite Disney character, super hero or villain. The sky is the limit. Here is a Halloween preview of the Corpse Bride look that I did on my sister Julia today. I say preview as I plan on creating more costume looks as we get closer to Halloween. Note: in the picture I put a blue overlay on Julia's hair since we didn't have a blue wig.

We have all been there. You wake up on the morning of a big event, possibly one you have been stressing over all week and you're greeted with an unwelcome zit. So you're looking in the mirror and thinking, now what? What can you do to cover it? Well, I am glad you asked.
Primer! There, I said it. The secret is out.
If you have a special event coming up, and you need your makeup to last the whole day, you might want to consider investing in a good primer. When I do bridal makeup I always make sure that the bride's face is moisturized and primed so her foundation and concealer go on as smoothly as possible. Smashbox primer is quite costly coming in at around $50. However, if you're going to spend the money this primer is well worth it.
Sephora also makes their own primer that is comparable to the Smashbox Photo ready primer (listed above) and is only $20. This is the one that I own. With primer, a little goes a long way. You don't want to put on too much, just a pea sized dab all over your face. If you put on too much, it does not do its job properly. Both of these primers provide a 'photo ready' finish, which makes them great for bridal makeup, or any special occasion where you know pictures will be taken.
I have also tried Smashbox's blemish control primer. If you're looking at this and thinking, green?! Don't worry. Green is used to combat redness. I will talk about this later when I review my favourite concealer wheel, so stay tuned! This primer is great if you're having a breakout. I used a sample I had gotten of this primer to help conceal redness in my blog post about the magic of makeup. It worked like a charm! So, if your wedding is coming up, and with it blemishes from stress, don't worry. This primer has got your back!
This primer is solely for your eye lids. It is Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Urban Decay is probably one of my favourite brands for eyeshadow. They have created the Naked Palette which I could easily say is one of the best makeup investments I have ever made (more on that later). This eyeshadow primer will make sure that your eyeshadow stays on all day! One bottle of this potion will also last you a long time.
Okay, last but not least! If eyeshadow primer seems like too far of a jump from your comfort zone I highly recommend this product! This little gem is Smashbox's Limitless 15 hr wear cream eye shadow. Let me tell you now, the name doesn't lie! I used this exact colour for my last bridal makeup application and it stayed on beautifully all day long. It can be used on its own or as a base.
Finally, if any of these Smashbox items look appealing to you my best advice I can offer is save up your Optimum points with Shoppers Drug Mart and when they have a spend your points event, go in and treat yourself to a few of these items. It feels like free makeup, and who doesn't love free makeup?
That's all for now. Thanks for reading!
Yesterday was such a beautiful day. Catherine looked gorgeous, and was glowing all day long. I also had the opportunity to do makeup for flower girls for the first time. Those little girls melted my heart. If you'd like to see pictures of the bridal makeup from yesterday click here.
Unfortunately, in the midst of all that activity I didn't get a picture of Catherine's final look in her dress. However, I will be posting some as soon as she gets her professional pictures back. I can't wait!
This was the makeup that I wore to Catherine and Shawn's wedding yesterday. I had a lot of fun with it and decided to put on some false lashes since it was a special occasion. If you'd like to know how to achieve this look, or have any suggestions on what you would like to learn more about, post a comment below.

Brushes are an investment. Good brushes are not cheap. Having lived on a student budget for years, I have learned a few tips and tricks about picking up brushes without breaking the bank. My best piece of advice, if you have your heart set on brand name brushes, is to shop for them at Christmas!
M.A.C and other makeup brands usually come out with a brush gift set during the Christmas season. Some of my favourite brushes come from a M.A.C set I received a few Christmas' ago. The other great thing about these gift sets is the brushes work out to be a fraction of the price if you were to buy them all separately. The only difference I have found is in the length of the handle, as they tend to be shorter. They can also be a bit smaller in size (my guess is likely to save on bristles). This has never bothered me, since it has allowed me to have quality makeup brushes at an affordable price!
