This is my grade 8 school photo. I wanted to share this picture for a number of reasons. This was the year I first began wearing makeup. Looking back now I am so thankful my mom didn't discourage me from trying my own makeup techniques. To me makeup has always been art, and a way to express yourself. I think most of us discover our own personal style through trial and error - and I have to admit it's fun to look back at some of the looks I thought were a 'good idea' at the time.
You probably can't see but in this picture I was wearing a terrible nude/brown lip liner, matched my eyeshadow to my shirt (a pale grey ) and tried to apply mascara to the best of my ability. I specifically remember the photographer taking his finger and trying to politely 'fix' my lip liner (ha ha!). My sister Olivia has a school photo where she snuck in cream blush and used it as lipstick - in Grade 3! That is one of my favourite school pictures of her.
I do hope to have children some day, and if my child comes out of their room in an interesting outfit, or perhaps they've attempted to style their own hair, and maybe even tried on some of my makeup - I plan to leave it be. In fact, I plan to encourage it. Personal expression and creativity are too important to me not to.
Do you have any gems in your school picture collection? I'd love to hear about them! Or better yet - send them to me! I'd love to see them.
